‘Cue the South: Lancaster’s BBQ- Huntersville, NC

Welcome to the very first stop on my ‘Cue the South BBQ Tour—where I travel across the South in search of the best barbecue joints, one plate at a time.

This week, we visited Lancaster’s Bar-B-Que in Huntersville, North Carolina

Lancaster’s has been a fixture in the Charlotte area barbecue scene for decades, with its Huntersville location opening in 2006 inside the historic Puckett’s Gas Station & General Store. The original restaurant began back in 1986 in Mooresville, and since then, Lancaster’s has built a reputation as a family-friendly stop for hearty plates of Carolina-style barbecue.

On arrival, I found the staff to be young but friendly, keeping service moving smoothly. The bill for my lunch totaled $14.45, which makes it a solid value compared to many barbecue joints in the region.

The Food

As always, I start every review the same way—trying the barbecue as-is, without sauce, before adding it later. The pork at Lancaster’s had fair tenderness, but it lacked that rich smoky depth that really sets great barbecue apart. Once sauce was added, the flavor improved, though it leaned toward mainstream rather than standout.

For sides, I ordered barbecue beans and collard greens, two staples I use to gauge consistency across my reviews. The beans were satisfying, if a touch on the sweet side. The collards, however, didn’t quite deliver the flavor and seasoning I look for. For me, collards are one of the best indicators of whether a barbecue joint really knows its way around Southern cooking, and these fell a little flat.

Atmosphere and Experience

The Huntersville location may not have the roadside kitsch of other Carolina spots, but it carries a straightforward, no-frills charm. Lancaster’s caters to families, locals, and travelers looking for a casual bite at a reasonable price. With its long-standing history and convenient location, it’s an easy stop for anyone passing through northern Mecklenburg County.

Final Thoughts

All told, Lancaster’s delivered a lunch that was perfectly serviceable, though not particularly memorable. The flavors were decent but lacked the punch of smoke and seasoning I expect from standout Carolina barbecue. Still, for $14.45 and quick, friendly service, it’s hard to complain too much.

Overall Rating: 6.5/10

Lancaster’s may not be the top of my Carolina barbecue list, but it’s a convenient and family-friendly option worth knowing about.

Have a barbecue joint I should try next? Drop it in the comments and I’ll add it to the Cue the South tour.
