Southern Scholar Socks

I used to think socks were boring, the item people give their Dad or husband when they don’t have a creative bone in their body or just lazy. The ultimate meh gift.

I used to believe that it didn’t matter what socks you wore and I personally hated getting socks as a gift.  There was a time where I didn’t care about such smalls details of what I was wearing. Who cares, right?

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that I should have cared. I’ve come to realize that life is all about the details, the small things.

Don’t worry, this is not a metaphorical article about how socks represent some grander purpose in the universe. No, this article is simply about giving a damn about the type of socks you wear because you need to dress right and act like somebody. This article is about a company that I have found that makes great socks, and you don’t even have to leave your house to get them.

Southern Shine Beard Oil: Review part2

When I first established  The Southern Blueprint, I envisioned working with great people from the South. I really wanted to identify brands that I could get behind, support, to help grow and watch succeed.  The South has so much to offer, and holds so many talented and special individuals.

One of those individuals is Jayson Reiher, owner of Southern Shine Beard Oil.

A few months back, Jayson was gracious enough to send me some samples of his product, which I ended up really enjoying. You can find the first article I did on them right here .

After chatting with Jayson about how much I really loved his product, he again, was nice enough to send me some more … this time … some new selections to try out.

Below, I give my two-cents about each one. These are just my personal preferences, so take them with a grain of salt. However, I’m incredibly smart so you should certainly listen to everything I say …

This one, I must say is my least favorite of the bunch. It’s a Tea Tree Blend that is for me, a little too strong of a fragrance. However, if you are looking for a “natural-hippyish” type of fragrance, this might be right up your alley. I know a lot of friends in the mountains of Asheville and Boone N.C. that might like this one! If you do use it, do so sparingly … a little goes a long way with this one.

Wise One:

I do like this one better than the Envy but again, not my favorite. This is what you would think a typical beard oil smells like. It’s a middle of the road, classic beard oil. Now, I’m not saying it’s just like all the other beard oils out there as far as quality or longevity of  fragrance. I’m just saying that it smells like your typical beard oil … something your Father or Grandpa would have worn. (thus the name Wise One?)—you will have to ask Jayson about that one.

Mint Eucalyptus:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you either love Eucalyptus or you don’t. I happen to love it, and when you combine that with the Mint, it’s pretty damn amazing.  One would think that with both the Eucalyptus and Mint together it would just burn the hell out of your nostrils and eyeballs, yet the pairing produces this surprisingly sweet smelling aroma.  It’s certainly one of my favorites.

This one is a cologne scented beard oil that I think the ladies will like. It’s a clean smelling fragrance … a very fresh out of the shower smell. Like a lot of good colognes, it actually smells better once it absorbs into the skin. If you are new to beard oil or have a significant other that hates the typical beard oil fragrance, I would certainly give this one a try!

This is another cologne scented beard oil that’s dynamite! I’m not exactly sure whats in it but it smells incredible. Jillian really likes this one as well.  A little dab of this goes a long way.  The scent tends to tame down some over time, yet sticks around for a while, making this one ideal for using on a date. Again, if you are new to the beard oil game try this one, I think you will get lots of compliments.

Bay Rum Beard Balm:

This one is a favorite for sure, and I like to pair it with a beard oil like the Fierce. It’s a sweet smelling balm with a spiciness bite to it. If you are not a fan of the oils, try this balm. You won’t need too much and the smell lasts pretty much all day. I actually prefer to use the balms over the oils at times as it makes my beard a little more manageable to comb and maintain.

Tobacco Road:

This is hands down my favorite of all the products I have tried so far (close with the Zest that I reviewed last time)! Let’s forget about the name for a second as it’s not what you think. This one smells like vanilla and cinnamon and spices that reminds me of the holidays … a euphoric, nostalgic feeling of awesomeness.  It’s also Jillian’s favorite. In fact, the first time she smelled it her eyes lit up like a Christmas tree.  I use this one the most and actually, I’m already about to run out … thats how much I’ve been using it.

Overall, the products Jayson sent over this time are just as incredible as the first batch he let me try. I’m really impressed with the quality of the selections, not just the quantity. There are thousands of beard oil companies out there, and most of them do the same things … they all smell the same way.  Jayson on the other hand has something really special here. With the selection that he has to offer, you will never get bored having to use  the same thing over and over again.

I also like the fact that Jayson’s beard oil and balms actually smell nice to the opposite sex. As I touched on it above with the Wise One, most beard oils smell the same and frankly, after speaking to a lot of females about it … they really don’t like it.

Give Southern Shine a try … you won’t be disappointed and neither will your significant other.

Southern Shine Beard Oil

Over the past few weeks while growing the ol’ beard out I’ve been using  Southern Shine’s Beard Oil and Beard Balm. Based out of Texas, Southern Shine was nice enough to send me some samples that I tested and tried out, and I must say that, so far, I’ve been pleasantly surprised.

It’s true that selling beard oil, or using beard oil, or talking about beard oil is the new chic and trendy thing to do. I get it. You see beard oil everywhere now.

But  listen, that is not a bad thing.

Too many men run around with unkept, flaky, shaggy, rats-nest looking beards that loved ones have to look at, smell and rub up against. They probably don’t have the heart to tell you that it looks like you have pubic hair dangling from your face or that it smells like Bigfoot’s dick, but I will … and it most certainly does.

To help you groom and tame that wild beast of a beard, beard oil will not only make your beard smell nice, it will help with beard itch, and you can form your flowing mane how you want. Along with actually helping hydrate your skin, it will keep the hair clean and looking smooth, and your significant other will thank you for it.

Throughout growing mine out, I tried these different products below, and I’ll give you a quick thought or two on each.

The Mint Eucalyptus Beard Oil:

This one smells great and a little dab will go a long way. I use this one at least once or twice a week as I enjoy the smell. However, Eucalyptus can be a strong fragrance so use sparingly when applying it.

Single Barrel Bourbon Blend:

The name is pretty amazing yet the Single Barrel Bourbon Blend is the one I have used the least. I do like the smell, but the aroma doesn’t seem to last as long on me as the other selections. Plus, I simply just like the other choices better.

Cafe Noir:

The most unique one out of the bunch. If you love coffee you will love Cafe Noir as it’s basically like having coffee smeared through your beard. Jillian really seems to like it as well and she said that it reminded her of a cozy winter day … what ever that means!

The Zest

Far and away my most favorite.  This one opens up the nostrils and awakens the senses. Jillian likes this one the best as well. It’s just a clean, fruity smelling fragrance that lifts the spirits. It’s perfect for Monday mornings when everything sucks. Unlike the Eucalyptus, I apply a lot of this … maybe a little more than I should!

The Shut-Eye Lavender

You either love the smell of lavender, or you hate it. If you hate it, this is certainly not for you. Me on the other hand, I really enjoy it and this is the one I use the second most (behind the Zest). Just like the Eucalyptus, a little dab will go a long way.

Southern Shine Texas Timber Beard Balm

Beard balm can be tricky to use and at times just a pain in the ass. I have tried other brands that you have to scrap the balm out with your thumb nail and it flakes off, and then you have to wait for it to melt to apply it. It’s more of a hassle than anything. However, Southern Shine Beard balm melts quickly, like hot butter, and you can apply it with no hassle. I also love the smell of Texas Timber and I will combine it sometimes with the Shut-Eye Lavender as it makes for an interesting aroma.

Overall, I have really enjoyed the products and will certainly continue to use them. I like that they are based in the South, but more importantly I like that they actually make a quality product.

Belts & Collars with Tackle and Hollar

Here at The Southern Blueprint we love to showcase and promote southern vendors, making sure folks see what all the beautiful South has to offer.

One of the companies we have had the pleasure of finding is Tackle and Hollar. Founder and Owner, Klaus Schoening, Jr was nice enough to send us some of his product to try, and we have simply loved it.

As soon as we opened their package of goodies, I quickly gravitated towards this Ducks Unlimited belt.

I just thought it had that old-south classy vibe to it. I put it on immediately.

As I wore the belt around and as we went through each piece we were impressed by the quality, whether it be the belts, key chains or dog collars. It’s one thing for it to look good, you also want it to last.

Their selection is perfect for that sporting Southern Gentleman as their options allow you to go a little dressy, yet you can also go casual, sporting your favorite southern team.

We then had Mr Steve model each dog collar and again, we appreciated the fact that not only were they fun and unique, they were also made well.  Mr. Steve loves to pull hard on his leash when we walk him, so it’s important that the collars are durable and the stitching is not going to burst when Steve suddenly sees a squirrel and wants to dart off after it.

Now,  to give you a little backstory about Tackle and Hollar

Klaus started his business in his garage back in 1997. Tackle and Hollar is his retail site and his manufacturer company is called Moon Shine which they wholesale to college bookstores, gift shops and other stores around the U.S. These products are made in Wellford, SC which is near Greenville, SC.

His first belt was a Tickertape belt called “Stocks of the Dow”,  then he started doing custom logos and South Carolina’s State Flag which got him into the wholesale business to stores.  When Klaus started,  he would always work many late nights so he called the manufacturing company Moon Shine since they worked till the Moon Shined. Klaus then decided to name his website Tackle & Hollar. Tackle could mean a football tackle, fishing tackle or to tackle a product, and Hollar for your favorite team or brand.

They have licenses with over 50 schools and their sister company,  Star Fish Vision has licenses with Ducks Unlimited and Guy Harvey.

We really appreciate Klaus letting us try his product and we think you should too. Be sure to follow them on Instagram
