In November of 1999, a late-night shooting on a quiet road in Charlotte set off one of the most disturbing criminal cases tied to professional sports.
At the center of it was Rae Carruth — a first-round draft pick for the Carolina Panthers — and Cherica Adams, a 24-year-old woman who, in her final moments, made a 911 call that would ultimately shape the entire case.
Most people remember the headline.
An NFL player.
A shooting.
A trial.
But the Rae Carruth case goes far beyond what happened on that road.
This was a story that stretched across months — from Carruth’s rise in the NFL, to the relationships in his life, to the events that led up to November 15–16, 1999.
What happened that night wasn’t random.
According to prosecutors, it was planned.
And once it happened, everything that followed — the investigation, the arrests, the trial — only made the story more complicated.
The trial began in 2000 and quickly became one of the most closely watched cases in the region.
Prosecutors argued that Carruth orchestrated the attack.
The defense pushed back, offering a different explanation and trying to create doubt around the events of that night.
In the end, the jury reached a verdict that surprised many.
Carruth was acquitted of first-degree murder but convicted on multiple other charges tied to the shooting.
He would go on to serve nearly 19 years in prison before being released in 2018.
Cases like this don’t wrap up neatly.
There’s no real sense of closure.
Cherica Adams lost her life.
Her son, Chancellor, survived — but with lifelong complications.
And the people involved in the case all carried forward in very different ways.
Even now, decades later, the Rae Carruth case is still talked about — not just because of who he was, but because of how it happened.
Because once you look past the headline, it’s not just a crime story.
It’s a story about choices.
And what happens when there’s no turning back.
In this episode of The Southern Blueprint Podcast, I go through the Rae Carruth case from start to finish — digging into the details, the timeline, and the aftermath.
If you’ve heard the name but never really looked into the full story, this is one worth understanding.
