Episode 1: Unveiling the Mysteries of ‘The Secret: A Treasure Hunt’
In our debut episode, we explore the fascinating world of “The Secret,” a fantasy book published in 1982 by Byron Preiss. This isn’t just any book; it’s a treasure map disguised as a fantasy novel. Inside its pages, you’ll find 12 intricate paintings paired with 12 cryptic poems. Each poem and painting combo leads to a hidden treasure buried somewhere in North America. To date, only three of these treasures have been found, leaving nine still waiting to be unearthed. Five of these hidden gems are right here in the Southern United States.
What Is ‘The Secret: A Treasure Hunt’?
“The Secret” isn’t your typical treasure hunt. It’s a complex puzzle that has captivated adventurers for decades. The treasures are real, and they are out there, waiting to be discovered by those clever enough to crack the codes hidden within the book. The only tools you need are the poems, the paintings, and a deep understanding of the locations they reference. But what makes this even more exciting is that these treasures have been buried for over 40 years; places have transformed, and landmarks have changed! Have some of these treasures been destroyed?
Why the South?
Of the nine treasures still undiscovered, five are buried in the South. This region, rich in history and culture, provides the perfect backdrop for such a mysterious adventure. The Southern locations we focus on in this episode are:
- Charleston, South Carolina
- Roanoke Island, North Carolina
- Houston, Texas
- New Orleans, Louisiana
- St. Augustine, Florida
Each of these cities holds a unique piece of the puzzle, with historical and cultural references that only true Southerners might understand.

The Five Southern Treasures: A Closer Look
Let’s take a deeper dive into the five Southern locations that are part of this great treasure hunt. Each city has its own history, its own legends, and its own connection to the puzzles presented in “The Secret.”
Charleston, South Carolina
Charleston is a city rich with history, from its cobblestone streets to its historic architecture. The clues tied to this city are deeply intertwined with its colonial past and its connection to the sea. Could a treasure be buried near one of Charleston’s iconic landmarks, perhaps near the Battery?
Roanoke Island, North Carolina
Roanoke Island is known for the mysterious disappearance of its early settlers, the so-called Lost Colony. The legend of Roanoke itself could be a clue to where a treasure might be hidden. The island’s eerie past provides the perfect setting for one of Byron Preiss’ hidden gems.
Houston, Texas
Houston is a city of contrasts, blending modernity with a rich history. The treasure here is likely tied to one of the city’s many historical sites, perhaps Hermann Park?
New Orleans, Louisiana
The Crescent City, with its deep roots in French and Spanish culture, its voodoo mystique, and its vibrant music scene, is a treasure in its own right. The clues to New Orleans’ hidden treasure might be found in its intricate street layout, its historic cemeteries, or perhaps near a site that celebrates the city’s multicultural heritage.
St. Augustine, Florida
As the oldest city in the United States, St. Augustine is a place where history is palpable. The treasure here could be connected to its Spanish past, perhaps buried near one of its many forts or historic buildings that date back to the city’s founding in the 16th century.
