This year marks the 150th edition of the Kentucky Derby, an iconic horse race that takes place annually on the first Saturday in May. It serves as the inaugural event of the esteemed Triple Crown series. Revered as “The Run for the Roses,” the winning horse is adorned with a splendid blanket of roses, symbolizing triumph and excellence. Origins

In 1872, Col. Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., grandson of William Clark from the famed Lewis and Clark expedition, embarked on a journey to England. Continuing his journey, Clark ventured to Paris, France, where a group of racing enthusiasts had established the French Jockey Club in 1863. The site, later named Churchill Downs in honor of John and Henry Churchill, who provided the land, officially received its name in 1937.

The inaugural Kentucky Derby, held on May 17, 1875, covered a distance of 1+1⁄2 miles (12 furlongs; 2.4 km), aligning with the length of the Epsom Derby. Approximately 10,000 spectators gathered to witness 15 three-year-old horses vie for victory. Guided by jockey Oliver Lewis and trained by future Hall of Famer Ansel Williamson, Aristides emerged triumphant in this historic race. Lewis later steered Aristides to a commendable second-place finish in the Belmont Stakes later that year.

Initially, the track enjoyed success, but financial challenges arose due to a prolonged horseman boycott linked to gambling issues. This setback relegated the venue from the forefront of racing until the Winn era. 

In 1894, the New Louisville Jockey Club was established, infusing fresh capital and enhancing facilities in a bid to revitalize the track’s fortunes. Despite these efforts, profitability remained elusive until 1902, when a syndicate led by Col. Matt Winn of Louisville took control. Under Winn’s leadership, Churchill Downs flourished, propelling the Kentucky Derby to prominence as the premier stakes race for three-year-old thoroughbred horses in North America.

Over the decades, the Kentucky Derby evolved from a local horse race into a national phenomenon. It became synonymous with Southern hospitality, glamour, and high society. In anticipation of the 150th Kentucky Derby, Woodford Reserve has unveiled its exclusive $1,000 and $5,000 Mint Julep charity cups (pictured above). A total of 300 cups have been meticulously crafted in honor of this milestone event, with proceeds from their sale benefiting the Backside Learning Center, an independent nonprofit dedicated to supporting Churchill Downs workers and their families.

Collaborating with Louisville-based jeweler From the Vault, each cup features iconic Churchill Downs Twin Spires, along with an engraved commemoration of the Derby’s 150th running.

 Of the 300 cups available, 200 are crafted from silver and adorned with 44 emeralds, priced at $1,000 each. The remaining 100 are fashioned from gold, embellished with 44 crystals, and include a limited-edition coffee table book chronicling 150 years of Derby history, priced at $5,000 each.

Interested patrons can acquire these coveted cups at the $1,000 Mint Julep Cup Experience held at Churchill Downs on Friday, May 3 (Kentucky Oaks Day) or Saturday, May 4 (Derby Day). Alternatively, customers have the option to purchase the cups online and have them shipped in time for Derby celebrations.

Woodford Reserve has crafted a special recipe for the 2024 mint julep, featuring their signature bourbon and a rose-infused honey simple syrup, paying homage to the 150th Run for the Roses. This unique blend promises to elevate the Derby experience, offering a taste of tradition with a contemporary twist.

Iconic Attire
